Gabon rallied to settle for a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso in another disappointing group “A” match for the hosts at the Stade de I’Amitie, Libraville Wednesday 18th.

Despite the Panthers switching on the heat early, they found themselves trailing by substitute Niguimbe Nakoulma’s 22nd minute strike.

However, they fought back fiercely, and in the 37th minute, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang converted from the spot, after being brought down in the forbidden area by the Stallions’ keeper Herve Koffi to restore parity.

Gabon, who squandered a 1-0 lead against Guinea Bissau to settle for a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the tournament on Saturday 14th, find themselves in a tricky situation, as they will need to see-off 4-times champions Cameroon in their last group fixture to at least stand a chance of progression.

The Coach Jose Antonio Camacho’s outfit showed early intent with sustained pressure, which almost paid off in the 7th minute when Athanase Denis Bouanga hit the woodwork with a rasping shot.

Jonathan Pitriopa was forced out of the game with just 8 minutes on the clock with an injury – serving the Stallions a big blow.

Nonetheless his replacement Niguimbe was equal to the task – making immediate impact.

Burkina Faso quickly turned defense into attack in the 22nd minute – unleashing the Turkey based forward with a long ball, which he guarded like his life depended on it – bullying his way past two Gabon players before striking low past advancing goalkeeper Didier Ovono, before racing to celebrate with his teammates on the touchline.

The lead, however, lasted up to the 37th minute when Aubameyang stepped on the plate, after being clipped down by Burkina Faso keeper Koffi, to coolly slot home – bringing to life the home support, which had gone mute after the Niguimbe’s opener.

Proceedings afterwards remained balanced, even in the second stanza, which saw less clear cut chances being created.

After a seesaw battle with all indicators pointing at a draw, Bouanga was fed right inside the D by Aubameyang who headed on his path, but the Tours FC’s striker fired marginally wide the best chance of the half – leaving crest fallen fans at the blow of the final whistle.

Burkina Faso will wind up their group matches against debutants Guinea Bissasu, who play Cameroon tonight.
