Afcon 2021: Madagascar in big victory against Niger away in Niamey

Madagascar completed their biggest ever victory in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying with a stunning 6-2 success against Niger in Niamey on Tuesday.

The margin of victory matches their 4-0 win over the Comoros Islands in 2007, but the six goals is their best haul on the road.

It is another sign of the rapid rise of the island nation, who qualified for their first ever Nations Cup finals in Egypt earlier this year and reached the quarterfinals, beating powerhouse Nigeria in the pool stages.

They have not also made it two wins from two at the start of the 2021 qualifiers as they followed up their 1-0 home success against Ethiopia with a massive win in Niger.

It was also Niger’s heaviest home Nations Cup qualifier loss since they were beaten 9-1 by Ghana in 1969.

Madagascar were 4-1 up at halftime thanks to a brace by Lalaina Nomenjanahary, and goals from Anicet (penalty) and Andria. Paulin Voavy and Jerome Mombris added two more in the second period.

Niger had taken an early lead through Amadou Wonkoye before being stung by six goals. Yussif Moussa grabbed a late consolation for them as well.
