AFCON U-17: Guinea come from behind to beat Senegal

Guinea came from behind to beat Senegal 2-1 in their Group B Match Day Two on Thursday evening at Chamazi Stadium, few miles outside Dar es Salaam City to boost their chances of a place at the next round of the Total Africa Cup of Nations U17, Tanzania 2019.

Goals from Bah Algassime and Momo Fanye Toure in either half were enough for Guinea to get maximum points, whilst Samba Diallo scored the consolidation for Senegal.

The result ensured Cameroon went through joining Nigeria as the two teams to have qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil later in the year. Cameroon leads the pack on six points, Guinea on three points with Morocco and Senegal in that order with just a point each.

Back to the game, Senegal had chance of scoring the opener after just two minutes but Pape Sarr’s shot inside the box was deflected to corner.

Diallo opened the scores sheet in the 11th minute, with his shot from outside the box that left Guinea goalie, Sekou Camara hapless.

Senegal lost two more chances to double their tally inside the 20th minutes of the game through Diallo and Mouhamadou Diaw.

Guinea leveled in the 33rd minute when Algassime went past Senegalese defenders and fired a shot that beat Senegal shot stopper, El Hadji Gueye.

Guinea suffered a blow two minutes after the break when Mahmoud Ben Bangoura was sent off for a second yellow after he fouled Senegal forward, Diaw outside the vital area.

Camara was on hand to deny Senegal in the 62nd minute to lower the pressure on his side.

At the other end, Algassime came close to putting Guinea up but his effort was no trouble for Senegal goalie, Gueye.

Minutes later, Senegal was forced to finish with 10-men just as their counterparts Guinea after Birame Diaw was sent off, also for a second yellow card.

Introduced in the 73rd minute instead of Conte Aboubacar, Toure scored the match winner for Guinea ten minutes to time to revive their hopes of going to the semifinal.

Algassime nearly made it three four minutes to time but his shot hit the post and return to the field of play.
