Mali were held to a goalless draw by Burundi in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako on Friday evening.

In a game of few chances, the Swallows stood firm in defence from start to finish to earn a hard fought point in the Malian capital despite conceding a late penalty.

There were few and far chances throughout, but the Eagles looked sure to grab all three points in the dying embers of the game following a contentious decision by the referee.

Abdoulay Diaby stepped up from 12 yards, but miscued his effort as Burundi held on for a point against all odds.

Mali continue to lead the way in Group C with seven points from three games, following victories over Gabon and South Sudan in their opening two qualifiers.

Burundi hold onto second spot ahead of the reverse fixture in Bujumbura on Tuesday.
