CAF CL: Sundowns coach Mosimane plots to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Al Ahly

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has opened up about how the club plan to overturn a 2-0 deficit and book their place in the semi-finals of the 2019-20 CAF Champions League.

A brace from Ali Maâloul spearheaded Al Ahly to a comfortable first-leg quarterfinal victory at Cairo Stadium last weekend, and if the Brazilians are to overcome the record eight-time champions within 90 minutes they will need to score at least three goals.

Mosimane is wary of Al Ahly’s strengths and admits his team couldn’t play to their own strengths in Egypt, something he hopes they will do at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sundowns beat Al Ahly 5-0 at the same venue last season on their way to a 5-1 aggregate win at the same stage of the competition.

“They play exactly the same way they played last year‚” Mosimane is quoted as saying by Dispatch Live.

“They are structured‚ they have body and they come inside all the time. They put bodies and that is not what South African football is about.

“Here‚ if you look at a team like Bloemfontein Celtic‚ there is a player like Tebogo Potsane and what‚ what. You know‚ the smaller ones‚ but in the Champions League there is nothing like that.

“It is more about power and the strength – just look at their players all over the field. You must have the right physique.

“They put interplay – if you look at their second goal against us in Cairo last weekend‚ it was interplay. They don’t do combination play like we do here in SA.”

Taking that into account, Mosimane will be counting on his skilful players to break down the Red Devils defence, much like they did under the Atteridgeville sun last year.

“We use guys like Gaston‚ ‘Mshishi’ [Zwane] and ‘Vila’ [Vilakazi] to control the game‚ and it helps a lot us being here at home.

“Away from home Ahly bring you down every break you get and you can’t play your normal football. But it’s the way it is and if you want to win the Champions League you don’t cry because no one is going to listen to you,” Mosimane concluded.
