CS Sfaxien defeated FUS Rabat 1-0 in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal second-leg encounter at the Stade Taïeb Mhiri in Tunisia on Friday.

However, it was Moroccan side Rabat, who advance to the semifinals after winning 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw on aggregate, while Tunisian giants Sfaxien bow out of the tournament.

Rabat went into the encounter leading on aggregate after winning 1-0 in the first-leg encounter in Morocco last weekend.

The Juventus of the Arabs got off to the best possible start as they were awarded a penalty in the 21st minute.

Karim Aouadhi then stepped up and beat Rabat goalkeeper Aymane Majid from the spot-kick to make it 1-0 to Sfaxien.

The tie was now locked at 1-1 on aggregate and the visitors tried to press Sfaxien in search of the equalising goal.

However, the hosts stood firm at the back until the match referee blew the halftime whistle and it score was 1-0 to Sfaxien at the interval.

Waliou Ndoye, a Senegalese striker, was introduced 18 minutes into the second-half as the hosts looked to double the lead.

But Sfaxien, who are three-time Confederation Cup winners, found it difficult to unlock the Rabat defence which was marshalled by Mandaw Sy.

In the end, Sfaxien won the match 1-0, but two sides were locked at 1-1 on aggregate and a penalty shootout followed.

Rabat went on to win 5-4 on penalties with Aouadhi, who had netted in regulation time, missing Sfaxien’s first spot-kick.
