CAF could postpone Afcon to 2022

CAF could postpone Afcon to 2022

The Confederation of African Football, CAF is considering postponing the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon due to the fact that the Coronavirus outbreak is no slowing down.

A CAF source is quoted by French radio RMC Sports saying it will be difficult to organize the tournament on schedule.

The continental football body is considering postponing the tournament set to be held in Cameroon to 2022 as a result of the tightened schedule.

The Afcon in Cameroon is supposed to kick off in January but the source states it is highly unlikely that it will go on as planned.

“There is almost no chance for the African Cup of Nations 2021 to be held next January,”the source said.

“The intention is to postpone the competition to be held in January 2022.

“It’s also possible to make it in the summer of 2022, because the World Cup will take place in November 2022.”

“But we have to study this idea very well so as not to destabilize the African teams participating in the World Cup,” the source concludes.

CAF have postponed all qualifying fixtures for the Afcon amidst the Coronavirus outbreak  which might cast doubt over the possibility of holding the actual tournament in time.
