Gor Mahia beat Leones Vegetarianos 2-0 in the African Champions League preliminary round first leg at Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium Saturday.

Kevin Omondi “Ade” and Ephrem Guikan scored for the hosts against the Equatorial Guineans, who were largely dominated the entire game.

Omondi put the coach Dylan Kerr’s side in the lead in the 19th minute firing past Leones’ goalkeeper Sapunga Manuel from close range following a superb combination with Meddie Kagere.

Humphrey Mieno missed from the spot to deny K’Ogalo the chance to double their lead in the 27th minute. The match ended 1-0 at the breather.

Kerr made early substitutions introducing Sammy Onyango for George Odhiambo but it was Ivorian Ephrem’s introduction in place of Omondi that made immediate impact in the 60th minute.

The former AS Port Louis striker scored on his first touch unleashing a left foot thunderbolt at the right to make it 2-0 for Gor.

A few minutes later he forced Sapunga to a fine fingertip over from another venomous shot.

Gor created more scoring chances but could not convert them as the match ended 2-0.

The Kenyan champions will travel to Malabo for the second leg in a week’s time. The aggregate winner proceeds to the 1st round of the premium interclub competition.
