Hosts Uganda’s Crested Cranes are through to the semi-finals of the 2016 CECAFA Women’s Championship with a hard fought 1-0 triumph over Burundi at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru on Thursday.

The Ugandan queens join their counterparts from Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia in the final four after finishing second in group “A” on six points from two wins and a single loss. Kenya’s Harambee Starlets finished top of the group with nine points out of three wins, without conceding a single goal.

Fazila Ikwaput netted the only goal of the match at the stroke of the first half to secure the passage at the expense of the Burundians who kissed the tournament goodbye.

Burundi started strongly hitting the whipping girls Zanzibar 6-1 in their group opener before going down 4-0 in the hands of Harambee Starlets in the second fixture and eventually bowing out today after the second loss. Crested Cranes on the other hands went down 4-0 to Kenya in the initial outing but recovered to hammer Zanzibar 9-0 before today’s victory.

Group “B” matches conclude tomorrow with a fixture pitting Ethiopia against Tanzania.
