“I know my roots and I cannot forget the journey I made.”
Those words by five times world number one and Russian Tennis great Maria Sharapova, must have been uttered with Zesco United’s most disciplined player David Odhiambo Owino in mind if his latest charitable gesture in his boyhood town is anything to go by.

Born and bred in the Kenyan town to the west called Nakuru, in the Rift Valley, Calabar as David is famously known in still in touch with where it all started, Flamingo Estate, the place where he fell in love with love with the beautiful game football while playing on the dusty fields then littered all over the Estate with his peers.

The defender who is currently on holiday after a splendid first season with Zambia Champions Zesco United, today (Sunday 6), fully kitted his boyhood club Flamingo FC in Zesco United colors.

He then joined them in the field briefly to share with them his vast experience in the game.

The team is currently participating in Nakuru inter-estates football tournament which kicked off on November 28 at Kamukunji Grounds.

“It’s the least I can do for them. This is where I started my fooballing life and I believe there are many more talent here yet to be unearthed,” Owino told Soka25east.com.

“This is just to motivate them to continue playing football. I want to show them that they can also make it in football. It’s my small way of saying thank you to Flamingo FC.”

Owino started off as a youth player for Nakuru All Stars Academy in 2004 which was then called St. Josephs academy after being spotted at Flamingo FC.

He then played for the All Stars senior side until 2008 when he moved to Karuturi, playing up to 2011 when he signed for Kenyan giants Gor Mahia.

The 27 year old then made a big money move to Zesco United in the Zambian Super League at the end of the 2014 season making him the first Kenyan to grace the South African League – he has so far become a household name at “Timu yaziko” where fans sing his praises, thanks to his talent, dedication and hardwork. Last month, the club honored him during their end year gala for being the most disciplined player.
