FIFA Womens WC: Spain beat debutants Banyana in opening fixture

Spain finally secured their first Women’s World Cup win after overcoming tournament debutants South Africa 3-1 at the Stade Océane in Le Havre, France.

In the first half Spain had the possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances to put the ball in the net.

But it was the African’s who drew first blood. Thembi Kgatlana put South Africa in the lead on 25 minutes with a stunning strike chipping the ball past the keeper after leading a swift counter attack. South Africa went into the break with their lead intact

Substitutes Bonmati, Garcia and Nahikari changed the game after the break for Spain.

South Africa had the opportunity to go 2 nill up but Kgatlana couldn’t connect with the ball well after great work on the wing by Ode Fulutudilu

The South Africa captain Janine Van Wyk was punished for a handball inside the box. Jennifer Hermoso converted the spot kick to draw La Roja level in the 69th minute.
Spain had the ball in the net once again as Torrecilla glanced a header home, but their celebrations are cut short by the assistant referee’s flag.

But the second goal was inevitable for Spain as a crude challenge in the box by Nothando Vilakazi saw her concede a penalty to Spain through a VAR review and the referee produced a second booking, and eventually sent off the Banyana left back.

Hermoso again stepped up to put Spain in the lead with 82 minutes played.

Lucia Garcia settled the tie with a lovely goal racing on to Torrecilla’s defence-splitting through ball, rounding the keeper and slotting home in 89 minutes.
