The race for the 2016 Sportpesa Premier League title took a new twist on Wednesday 14 after the defending champions Gor Mahia won their match in hand 1-0 against hopefuls Ulinzi Stars at Nyayo Stadium.

The three invaluable points propelled K’Ogalo to within two point’s reach of leaders Tusker at second place on 43 points and pile pressure on the Coach Paul Nkata’s side they will face on the last day of the league.

George Odhiambo “Blackberry” was the toast of the evening for the Ze Maria’s men burying the match decider in the 40th minute.

Earlier, Rwandan striker Jacques Tuyisenge and prodigy Amos Nondi wasted two clear chances in the half as the hosts showed more hunger for success.

The physical encounter turned ugly in the second half when Ulinzi Stars’ defender Mohammed Rio was involved in an off the ball incident leading to his dismissal with about 30 minutes to go. The huge setback slowed down the soldiers’ resurgence and search for the leveler, with Gor taking advantage of their numerical strength to boss the proceedings.

At the blow of the final whistle, it was the 15-times who were champions smiling all the way knowing the victory was another step closer to a fourth crown on the bounce.

Gor ‘s next league assignment will be versus struggles Sofapaka SC on September 25 while the Brewers win travel to the Coast to face a resurgent Bandari FC on 23.
