Kaizer Chiefs show character as they overcome leaders Bidvest Wits

Kaizer Chiefs showed character as they overcame Absa Premiership leaders Bidvest Wits 2-0 in Wednesday’s league clash at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.

The first half produced few opportunities for either side though Sifiso Hlanti fired over the bar in the early exchanges but Virgil Vries in goal had it covered.

It was the home side who again threatened with their direct tactics as Terrence Dzvukamanja forced Vries into a full-length diving save just before the break.

However, after the interval Chiefs grew in confidence and would take the lead through Leo Castro.

Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya showed pace and strength down the left before his low cross was converted by Castro at the near post beyond Darren Keet.

The Glamour Boys were enjoying their best spell of the game as the lively Hendrick Ekstein sent in a superb cross which Lebogang Manyama sent just wide of the target.

Nonetheless, the Clever Boys were wilting and it would not be long before Ernst Middendorp’s men made it 2-0 in the closing stages.

A flowing team move saw Ekstein find Castro who played in a lovely weighted pass to the onrushing Bernard Parker, on as a substitute.

The veteran Amakhosi star pulled the ball back to Ekstein who slotted home beyond a stranded Keet in goal.

In the closing stages Robyn Johannes saw red for a foul and then seemingly verbal abuse by referee Victor Gomes.

There were no further alarms as Chiefs climbed back up the table yet Wits still enjoy a two point lead over Orlando Pirates at the top of the PSL standings.
