Kenyan footballers give FKF/KPL Ultimatum

By Betty Njeri,

The Kenya  football scene  became  more  murkier after current players threatening to boycott the sport if nothing tangible is agreed upon by Monday next week.

The players  who convened  an urgent meeting at the Nyayo National Stadium demanded  an immediate  ceasefire between  Football Kenya Federation and Kenyan Premier League

The two parallel leagues dominated weekend action with FKF  hosting two matches  while  KPL went ahead to  organize  seven matches  under
the backdrop of    court order.

Addressing the media, Bandari captain and former Harambee Stars stopper Wilson Obungu accused the two bodies for taking Kenyans for a  ride.

“FKF and KPL are putting our careers and lives at risk,We won’t just sit down and watch them muscle up at our expense. We (players) are giving the (Fkf/Kpl) a one week ultimatum to put their house in order or  boycott their matches.” He retorted.

“We want a unified league, we have been taken for granted,” added Obungu. “We have ambitions. We want to play the African Champions League. We want to play abroad  but what happens if a team wins the league title at the end of this season?

Obungu said the players form an integral part of the football stakeholders and called on the two warring sides to listen to them and put the unrest to a conclusion, once and for all.

“If they fail to iron out their issues by Monday next week, we (players) will meet and see the way forward-we have many avenues,” added Obungu. “We can even boycott playing those leagues.”

Obungu added that the players’ situation in the management of the sport insisting: “We also want players’ representative in both KPL and FKF.”

“We are also disappointed with Kenyan Football Players’ Welfare Association. We have had issues especially with Eugene Asike – whose release letter had been withheld by Sofapaka but who has been ordered by IDCC to release it,” observed Obungu, who was the players’ spokesman.

“Most of us going for months without pay, but KEFWA have not been acting.”
“We will form another union, a strong one, if KEFWA doesn’t fight for
players’ rights,” he threatened.
