KPL-2015: Mathare ends Tusker’s unbeaten run

By Evans Oduor,

Mathare beat Tusker 1-0 at the City Stadium on Friday
31 July to break the Brewers’ five match unbeaten streak.

Having scored 14 goals in their last three matches Tusker were the
clear pre match favorites and Okumbi was well aware of this fact as he
prepared his charges for the match.

“Tusker is an attacking team and we knew defending well would be a
huge step to a win. We also took our chances and defended well. It was
a tough match, quite tactical but I am happy we won,” Okumbi speaking
on his master plan which won him the match..

Abich goal

A moment of magic three minutes to the break saw Daniel Mwaura run
towards goal losing two defenders before being brought down by Lloyd
Wahome. Abich, who had earlier handled the ball in his box, stepped in
to take the resultant free kick and made no mistake placing it in
the top right corner to give Mathare United the lead and the only
goal of the match.

Mathare climb to sixth from ninth courtesy of the result and Okumbi
says winning the next three will be vital in settling him down.

Top five

Mathare’s next assignment will be on Friday 7 August against Nairobi
City Stars. Okumbi still believes his side can make it to the top five
by the end of the season.
