KPL Review: Mighty Gor Mahia reign supreme,Leopards rise as KCB upset Tusker in weekend showdown

Kenyan Premier League goal fest continued in earnest over the weekend  with  8 fixtures lined up  in the  12th round of matches.

 

A total of 21 goals were scored six by three players who grabbed a brace each.

Gor Mahia registered the biggest scoring margin of the season thrashing hapless Nakuru All Stars five goals to nothing.

Gor Mahia 5-0 Nakuru All Stars

The reigning KPL champions stretched the unbeaten run to 12 matches with the 9th win of the season thrashing relegation strong candidate Nakuru All Stars 5-0 in a breathtaking match played at the Nyayo stadium on Sunday 17th.

The win cements K’Ogalo’s top spot position with 30 points 9 clear of second placed AFC Leopards.

Rwandan international Meddie Kagere produced a master class display to engineer the visitor’s demolition; he opened the rout in the dying minutes of the first half with a glancing header before grabbing his brace in style in the 75th minute.

The other scorers of the day included Michael Olunga in the 69th minute, Ali Abondo from the spot in the 72nd minute before defender Harun Shakava finished the humiliation in the last two minutes of the game.

All Stars remain rooted at the bottom of the log with a negative 22 goal difference and it will take a miracle to salvage their season.

AFC Leopards 2-0 Muhoroni Youth

Leopards rebirth continued with a clinical 2-0 win over strugglers Muhoroni Youth in a KPL fixture played at the Nyayo stadium on Saturday 16th. The win pushed “Ingwe” to second spot in the log their best position in the 2015 campaign.

Red hot Jacob Keli who seems to have rediscovered his scoring mojo put the hosts ahead in the second minute with a superb volley after being put through by Ugandan international Musa Mudde to go joint top of scorers chart with 8 goals. Defender Jackson Saleh sealed the three points with a fine header at the stroke of half time to the relief of the ever restless head coach Zdravko Logarusic.

Muhoroni Youth coach Francis Baraza is a man under pressure and the fact that their next match is against high scoring Gor Mahia doesn’t make matters any rosier for him. They remain 13th in log with 11 points from 12 matches.

Mathare United 2-1 Western Stima

Eric Johana grabbed a brace scoring in both halves to ensure Mathare United record the 4th win of season and move to top ten in the KPL log in an early kick off match at Nyayo on Sunday 17th.

Ronald Okoth scored for the Kenya Power sponsored side with his second goal of the season as Stima dropped to 7th with 19 points, the play AFC Leopards in their next fixture.

Sofapaka 2-1 Sony Sugar FC

Fiston Abdul Razak grabbed another brace of the weekend to help Sofapaka register two wins on the trot to move to third on the table with 21 points in a KPL match played on Sunday 17th at the Machakos Stadium.

Fiston struck in the 13th minute after being put through by the evergreen John Baraza before he added the second five minutes off Heritier Kuvualu assist. The two added to the Fiston’s tally to 6 goals thus far.

The weekend loss was Sony’s second in three fixtures as they dropped to 10th in the log with 15 points.

Thika United 1-2 Ulinzi Stars

Ulinzi’s dominance over Thika continued over the weekend with a 2-1 win over the hosts at Thika Stadium on Sunday 17th; the win was Ulinzi’s 5th over their opponents in the last 14 meetings.

Oliver Ruto opened the scoring for the Soldiers in the 11th minute before Thika skipper Dennis Odhiambo leveled the scores from the spot in the 30th minute. John Makwata added his tally to six goals grabbing the winner in the 82nd minute. Ulinzi is 4th in the log with 20 points having played a game less.

Thika United lost their second match in a row this dropping to sixth in the KPL log with 19 points.

KCB 1-0 Tusker FC

KCB who are still lingering over the danger zone registered second win of the season with a surprise 1-0 win over the ten times champions on Sunday at city Stadium.

The all-important goal was delivered by Paul Kiongera in the 73rd minute to the relief of stand in Coach Elvis Ayany.

Tusker occupies fifth spot in the log with 19 points, 11 points behind leaders Gor Mahia.

City Stars 1-1 Ushuru FC

The two settled for the draw in an early kick of match on Saturday 16th at Nyayo.  The tax men opened the scoring in the 23rd with Mohammed Hassan lovely shot after being fed by Allan Kateregga before Bruno Sserunkuma capitalized on defender Kanamuli Kapilima’s blunder to level the scores.

Ushuru is 9th in the log with 16 points while City remains in the relegation zone a spot above Nakuru All Stars.

Chemelil FC 1-1 Bandari FC l

The Dockers went ahead in the 47th minute through Anthony Kimani’s strike but they could not hold on to the as Alloys Mangi equalized in the 80th minute to share the spoils. The match that was characterized by claims of biased officiating by the Bandari FC bench was staged at the Kisumu Stadium.
