KPL WEEK 22 PREVIEW: Gor Mahia returns to league action

Champions Gor Mahia returns to league action on Sunday, August 9 buoyed by the impressive run at the just concluded CECAFA Kagame Cup in Tanzania where they finished second behind Azam.

While away for the two weeks in Dar Es Salaam, little has changed on the Kenyan Premier League table as they (Gor) still top the log with 46 points, six more than second placed Ulinzi Stars who has played three games more.

K’Ogalo coach Frank Nuttall on return set a target of returning back to CAF and CECAFA competitions next year by retaining the league crown unscathed – the team is still unbeaten in 18 league matches.

“The aim is always to work and be tested at the highest level, so the target is to qualify for CAF and CECAFA competitions next season. So we will try to win all of our remaining league games so that we can meet our target.”

This tie has traditionally been action packed and high scoring, except for the goalless draw in August 2014 – the rest of the past six fixtures have recorded an average of two goals per match, and tomorrow’s game is expected to offer nothing less.

KCB who beat Thika United 3-2 in their last league fixture will march into this encounter motivated by the sizzling form their talisman Paul Mungai Kiongera is currently in, the Simba SC forward who is on a season long loan at KCB scored all the three goals to walk away with the match ball.

K’Ogalo defense which was largely blamed for the loss to Azam in the CECAFA final, will have to be at their best to contain the menacing runs of Kiongera who has always scored against them each time they face each other. Kiongera was part of the victorious 2013 Gor squad which lifted the league title for the first time in 18 years, and he understands his former teammates who are still part of the team.

Michael Olunga will be the key man for Gor, the CECAFA golden boot winner is currently on 12 league goals and still on the chase for league top scorers award, he is expected to partner Rwandan Meddie Kagere in attack.

A win for the bankers could see them move to twelfth on the log with 23 points.
