KWPL fixtures released despite uncertainty over resumption of contact sports

KWPL fixtures released despite uncertainty over resumption of contact sports

by Agnes Amondi

Kenya Women’s Premier League fixtures for the 2020/2021 season have been released. The league is scheduled to start on the weekend of November 28.

This comes even as there is still uncertainty over whether contact sports will be allowed to resume due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The infection rates are on the rise with 685 people having tested positive for COVID-19 latest Monday.

Last season’s WPL results were declared null and void after the league was suspended after only the first round of games.

A look at the fixtures

Zone A

League runners up Gaspo Women will begin their quest to secure a first WPL title at home against Zetech Sparks at the Gikambura Grounds on November 28. Two weeks later, the first of two Kiambu Derby – Thika Queens vs Gaspo takes place at the Thika Stadium before a home game against Kayole Starlets.

Kibera Girls Soccer Academy and Mathare United Women complete Gaspo’s first five fixtures – the former at the Gikambura Stadium on December 20, the latter at the Camp Toyoyo grounds on January 10.

Meanwhile, Makolanders play Kibera Girls Soccer Academy at the Camp Toyoyo stadium at 2:00 pm.

Title contenders Thika Queens visit Ruiru Grounds to battle for the first three points of the season against promoted Ulinzi Starlets on November 29.

On the same day, Camp Toyoyo will host Kayole Starlets against Mathare United Women.

Zone B

The league will be played in zonal format – zone A and zone B – each with eight teams.

Defending champions Vihiga Queens open their campaign against Wadadia on November 28. They travel away to newly promoted SEP Oyugis before a return back home to play Oserian Ladies. Eldoret Falcons will visit the Mumias Sports Complex on December 20. Vihiga will round up their first five fixtures against newbies Nakuru West Queens a fortnight later at the Afraha Stadium.

Other fixtures in zone B will see Trans Nzoia Falcons start their season at home against Eldoret Falcons at the Kenyatta Stadium in Kitale. Nakuru West Queens travel to Oserian Grounds for their first tie in the top tier to take on Oserian Ladies while Kisumu All Starlets face off against SEP Oyugis.
