Legendary Cup fighters

One of the prestigious cup tournament in the History of Zambian football had different faces at different times.

From 1961 this was was called Catle Cup and changed it’s name to Independence cup in 1975. Mufulira Wanderers would win it in its new name in 1975. The name would again change to Mosi Cup in 1993 and the first winner in that yeat would be Nkna who would fail to defend it lose to lose to Roan United in 1994.

In its early years this competition was not only relevant on the domestic front but would be used as a qualifier to play the winners of the same competition in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) that was between 1962 to 1965 which would then be called ‘Super Castle Cup’.

We had a total of 47 titles of this competition from 1961 when City of Lusaka won it to 2007 when Red Arrows beat Zesco United via penalty shoot outs that ended 3-2.

But the big story of it all was Mufulira Wanderers who enjoyed their times as the legendary cup fighters in this country.
They first won it in 1965 and the 9th time was in 1995 beating Rumlex 1-0. Mufulira Wanderers would then go into oblivion in division one and disapear in the limelight of Zambian football as mines we’re privatised due to sponsorship issues.

WHAT NOW
This is what made Zamabian football and the reason we have Mufulira Wanderes bragging as the legendary Cup fighters . It painted the nation with great name and one will wish these companies we have should emulate Barclays Bank and bring more Cup games in this great football nation .

For Mufulira Wanderers they will always be looking at the past and hope the old days would be dragged today to have serious competition with the current creams of Zambian football. with good preparations and eyes on the ball it could definatley happen.
