Burundi – Messenger Ngozi FC atoned for losing the league to Vital’O by beating them in the 2016 President Cup final on Saturday.
After a 1-1 stalemate at Sosumo Stadium in Rutana Province, the match went straight to the dreaded penalty shoot out, with Ngozi winning 4-3.
Enock Nsabumukama gave Ngozi the lead in the first half – a lead they held onto firmly as they look set to finish the job in open play but Vital’O were not letting go just yet.
Styve Nzigamasabo drew level the Primus League champions six minutes to stoppage time to send the tie to spot kicks.
Dany Urasenga, Karikera Ibrahim, Enock Nsabumukama and Keeper Bienvenie were successful for Ngozi while Styve Nzigamasabo, Iddy Djumapil and Laudit Mavugo converted their penalties for Vital’O.
Shassir Nahiamana the league’s most valuable player and Yamin Selman missed their kicks on the Vital’O side with keeper Mac Arthur saving Nomomo Abdul effort, Ngozi’s only missed penalty.
The Ngozi Province based side will represent Burundi in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
