Military Games: Ulinzi Starts title defense with a draw

By Evans Oduor,

Match Report: Kenya 0-0 Rwanda

Kenya’s Ulinzi Stars started their title defense with a barren draw against Rwanda’s APR in their first match of the East Africa Military Games played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Monday morning. Despite having the biggest possession Ulinzi could not find a way past the Rwandese defense.

Ulinzi had a great start to the match when Rwanda defender Amaeus rugwiro presented them with a chance when he headed Justine Onwong’a’s cross but his goalkeeper managed to backtrack and tip the ball over for a corner.

Rwanda were put on pressure for better parts of the game and they only waited to hit on the counter attack. They had their first chance in the 41st minute with Fiston Nkinzingabo hitting a shot onto the side netting.

Coach Matano made a double substitution bringing in Boniface Onyango for Ben Sande while injured Oscar Wamalwa paved way for Evans Amwoka. At the start of the second half it was an offensive kind of change from the coach and this worked as the soldiers launched more forays upfront.

John Mark Makwatta had closest opportunity when his shot went wide after picking up the ball from Kevin Amwayi’s long throw.

Makwatta was presented with other opportunity minutes later but his shot from the edge of the box was blocked.

Ulinzi will now need to clean their act before their next match
against a tough Burundi side on Wednesday August 18.
