Mixed results for East Africans abroad

A good number of East Africans playing abroad were active for various clubs across Europe and Africa in a weekend characterised by mixed fortunes.

Farouk Miya

The former Vipers talisman hit the road running for his new side Standard Liege in the Belgium Pro League with a maiden starting berth and a goal in a 4-1 obliteration of Royal Excel Muscron on Saturday 23.

Miya was in the field for an hour and scored the equalizer in the 31st minute after Filip Markovic had given Muscron the lead in the sixth minute.

Giannis Maniatis, Gabriel Boschilia and Benjamin Tetteh scored the other goals for Liege in the 52nd,73rd and 77th minutes respectively.

Liege are second on the table standings with seven points, a point behind Kortrijk.

David Owino

‘Calabar” as he is nicknamed, scored the only goal of the tough tie for Zesco United as they beat Green Eagles 1-0 in Choma also on Saturday.

“Team Ya Ziko” sits 5th on the log with nine points from three straight wins and still have four matches at hand.

The team has been engaged in the CAF Champions League where they have reached the lucrative group phase.

The Kenyan international defender has cemented his role in the George Lwandamina’s outfit since joining a season ago from Kenyan giants Gor Mahia; his ability to rise to the occasion for the Zambian champions at crucial moments has made him the darling of fans.

Two more Kenyans; Anthony Akumu and Jesse Were were involved in the match for Zesco United.

Mbwana Samatta

The Tanzania captain was on the losing end as his club K.R.C Genk fell 2-1 to KAA Gent in the Belgium top league on Sunday 24.

Samatta who has scored twice for Genk thus far started the match but was pulled out early in the second half after colliding with opposing defender and sustaining a nose injury.

He was replaced by Nikolaos Karelis in the 46th minute; reports indicate that the nose was not broken as was earlier feared.

Leon Bailey put Genk in the lead in the 16th minute before Laurent Depoitre restored parity for Gent in the 23rd minute.

The visitors grabbed the winner in the extra time through Renato Neto to take all the three points.

Allan Wanga

The former Tusker FC and AFC Leopards striker helped Azam FC reach the semi final of Tanzania Cup after beating Mwadui FC 5-3 in post match penalties.

The match played at Mwadui Complex on Sunday settled for a 2-2 draw after extra time and had to be decided via penalty shoot outs.

Allan Wanga, John Bocco, Hamid Mao, Aggrey Moris and Wazir Salum all converted for Azam while Jabir Aziz, Idd Mobi, Malika Ndeuke were successful for Mwadui. Kevin Sabato missed for the hosts.

Johanna Omollo

Johanna Omollo’s Royal Antwerp crushed 2-1 away to Union Saint Giloise in the Belgium Jupiter League on Sunday 24.

The Kenyan international played the full length of the match staged at the Stade Joseph Marien Stadium. Antwerp are joint top of the league after 31 fixtures with 61 points same as AS Eupen who have a superior goal difference.

Ayub Timbe Masika

Timbe was on the field for 90 minutes as Lierse SK battled to a barren draw against Lommel United on Sunday 24 at Herman Vanderpoorten stadium.

Lierse are 8th in the Belgium Jupiter League standings with 48 points from 31 matches.

Dennis Onyango

Uganda Cranes keeper Dennis Onyango returned to action for Mamelodi Sundowns in a Nedbank Cup match against Orlando Pirates which they lost 2-0 in Pretoria on Saturday 23.

The Buccs who played the better part of the match a man down after Ghanaian defender Gyimah was sent off scored all the two goals in the extra time after a barren 90 minutes.

Tendai Ndoro scored the first goal in the 110th minute with Mpho Makola doubling the lead ten minutes later.
