Morocco World Cup star Amine Harit has been involved in a fatal car crash in Marrakech .

The 21-year-old, voted Bundesliga Rookie of the Year for 2017/18 after his debut season with Schalke, has been released pending further investigations into the accident.

According to initial police reports, Harit was driving a French-registered Mercedes shortly after midnight on Friday, when he collided with a pedestrian attempting to cross a busy road in bad visibility. The man, reportedly 28 years of age, later died due to his injuries.

Local police have confirmed that Harit’s 14-year-old brother was also in the car, but quashed initial suggestions that it had been he behind the wheel as they continue with their investigation.

He has given his testimony on a voluntary basis, to local police and will appear before a prosecutor on Monday to be questioned again. His passport has been confiscated by the public prosecution service.

Harit made one appearance for his country at the finals in Russia, as they were eliminated at the group stage.

That came on the back of an excellent breakthrough season at Schalke, for whom he made 29 Bundesliga appearances following an €8million move from French side Nantes.
