Mumias Sugar to rescue AFC Leopards with continued sponsorship until end of the season

By Lorraine Ruto,

Troubled AFC Leopards have seen it all this season the good and the bad after their main sponsors Mumias Sugar terminated their contract because of financial constraits at the sugar company.

However there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel as the plight of Ingwe has touched the Mumias Sugar board who have decided to come back onboard albeit upto the end of the season to help alleviate the suffering Ingwe has undergone from players leaving the club and even staying away from training.

Soka25est.com has reliably learnt that both AFC Leopards management and Mumias Sugar have been in close meetings where a decision was reached to continue with the sponsorship until end of the season.

“Mumias Sugar  Managing Director, Coutts Otolo, has  reconsidered the decision and therefore Mumias Sugar will continue with their sponsorship until end of the season since the contract was teminated without any prejudice. This is a social responsibility that we thought will effectively alleviate the suffering of the club”A close source in the company told Soka25east.com

AFC Leopards’ hierarchy is hopeful of retaining financial support from Mumias Sugar until the rest of this league season at the very least, ahead of a round-table meeting between the two parties this week.

AFC Leopards woes exposed the team as they barely could survive and mostly depended on handouts from well wishers who came to their rescue as players staged sit-in’s to protest non payment of salaries and accrued bonusses.

On May 13, players were detained at Jambo Village Hotel in Mombasa for close to five hours over unpaid bill however former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho  settled bill both donating Ksh 100,000 each.

Westlands Member of parliament  Tim Wanyonyi also donated  ksh  Sh200,000 in cash that was  shared equally among  the 20 players.

Webuye MP and former AFC Leopards chairman  Alfred Sambu also donated Sh12,000 to each player and technical bench member last month.
