Opinion:Unwise decision by Football Kenya Federation on transfer of players from unaffiliated clubs and competitions

By Fredrick Nadulli,

The football Kenya Federation came into office on a platform of goodwill and development going forward, with various promises that left the game’s enthusiasts and stakeholders rubbing their hands in delight. Prospects were good then, at least on the surface.

Recent announcements however have cast aspersions on their whole sincerity and if implemented threaten to throw the sport into limbo, more so at grassroots level.
UNPOPULAR DECISION
The federation has categorically stated that clubs participating in unsanctioned leagues and/or tournaments will not be entitled to player development fee or transfer fees in case of a potential move. For the record, it is this same regime that relentlessly fought against the idea when they were gunning for office in a move that is now glaringly turning out to be a mere popularity gimmick and campaign stunt at the expense of the many youth they purport to advocate for.
Keen observers opine that this is a deliberate attempt to stifle the Sportpesa-sponsored Super 8 League that has given players in the grassroots a fresh lease of life and renewed hope. Mind you, there is not enough places for football players in the top division and other FKF-friendly leagues, and therefore such tourneys and leagues provide a much needed escape avenue for wannabe youngsters eager to make the sport their chosen career.
DROP IT PRONTO
The unpopular decision smirks of betrayal and pushes hypocrisy to a whole new level. The fact that the federation has failed to consult widely and engage all concerned paints it in bad light.Players want to play. Let them be. And while at it, clear any hurdles that may hinder the development of the game and allow any income to bolster the coffers of these clubs. It is the least the federation can do.
