POWER DYNAMOS ALMOST BACK TO POWER 90

POWER DYNAMOS COULD HAVE THE BELIEF OF 90”s BACK.
This is another big Footballing team in the country situated in Ndeke in the city of Kitwe. They share the City with their arc rivals Nkana FC.
The team has grown in stature and has one of the most organised supporters society in the country. It is prudent to say Power Dynamos has started going international with fans as far as Norway. Big step in the right direction. The team is currently sponsored by Copperbelt Energy Corporation.

Power Dynamos opened the 90s with a declaration of intent by giving themselves a new title ‘Power 90’. and they lived to this billing NO DOUBT.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MOST DECORATED TEAM (POWER 90)
(I) SUPER LEAGUE
Power Dynamos has won the League title six times and holds one of the records as one of the teams which has never defended the league title every time they have won it.
It just took 13 years from the time Power Dynamos was formed in 1971 to win their first league title and that was in 1984 grabbing it from Nkana. Failed to defend it the following year and handed it back to Nkana in 1985. Power would then go six years without a league title until 1991 when they got the second league title a year after their exploits in the Caf winners cup. But again Nkana would make sure Power Dynamos fail to defend the title but this time they wouldnt wait for a long time and they would grab it away from Nkana after two years in 1994.
After 1994 triumph Power would give way again but this time to Mufulita Wanderers for two seasons before they get it back in 1997 and the sequence of after two years would continue as the next came in 2000 which happened to be the fifth title. The sixth and last title for Power Dynamos remains that 2011 triumph here the team played very good football and they will be hoping this is another year they would add up another league title . The longest Power had stayed without winning a title from the time they started winning is from 2000 which took 10 years and am sure the fans and exco wouldn’t want to wait that long , but we have already done four years from 2011! Is this the year! we wait and see.

OTHER HONOURS
INDEPENDENCE CUP
This was formerly called Caste Cup until 1974 but note that Power Dynamos was only formed in 1971 and never won it before the change of name in 1975 when it was now called Independence Cup.
The first final for Power Dynamos in this tournament was in 1979 when they played Ndola United in a game that didn’t see any goals for the whole 90 minutes and extra time. The game had to be separated on penalty shootout which Power Dynamos won 7-6, This happened to be the first major trophy in the cabinet of Power Dynamos and Power Dynamos had introduced themselves fully on the Zambian scene.
They defended the Independence Cup in 1980 beating Green Buffaloes in the final 2-0 and it looked as though another giant had risen to join Mufulira Wanderers, Nkana and Kabwe Warriors at that time.
Power would then fail to reach the final in 1981 when a Ndola outfit side Vitafoam United would win it that year. But in 1982 the Athur Davies outfit in Power Dynamos would grab it again in their biggest final victory beating Konkola Blades 5-0 to win the tournament three times in four years.
After that, Power would wait for 8 years before their best year and tag POWER 90 to grab the Independence Cup again. That would be in 1990.
Independence Cup would change the name to Mosi Cup in 1993 and Power Dynamos would struggle to put their name on the new rebranded Mosi Cup until 1997 when they would again make it to the final against City of Lusaka beating the capital city boys 1-0.
Two years later Power would play Zamsure in the final and lose but would come back in 2001 to beat Kabwe Warriors 1-0 to grab their sixth. They would fail to defend the Mosi Cup the following year against Zanaco in the final to lose on penalty shoot out after a 2-2 score line but would then come back for it in 2003 beating Kabwe Warriors 1-0 to win it for the seventh time and that would be the last they would participate in the final before the tournament’s end in 2007.
Only Mighty Mufulira Wanderers has won it more times (9) than Power Dynamos (7).

BP TOP EIGHT CUP
This is one of the oldest tournament in Zambia as it had been in existence earlier before 1964. It was called Rhodesian Challenge Cup ealier but later became to be known as Challenge Cup and in the early 80s it became to be called BP top 8.
Power Dynamos has three titles to its name but played in five finals . The following are the finals Power Dynamos participated in:
1988 Zanaco 2-0 Power Dynamos
1990 Power Dynamos 2-0 Profund Warriors
1999 Nkana 4-1 Power Dynamos
2001 Power Dynamos 2-1 Zanaco
2002 Kabwe Warriors 1-0 Power Dynamos

BARCLAYS CUP
The only Cup game surviving that also involves division one clubs and Power Dynamos has participated in four finals winning two and losing two.
The first final for Power Dynamos happened in 2008 against Zesco United which Power Dynamos lost 1-0.
Power Dynamos would then regroup the following season to reach the final and win it for the first time in 2009 beating Green Buffaloes in the final 2-1
Zesco United would then win the 2010 edition but Power would grab the 2011 edition beating Konkola Blades 2-1
The last final that Power Dynamos would participate in would be in 2012 in the highest scoring final of the barclays cup since its inception. The final pitted Napsa Vs Power Dynamos and ended 4-4 after extra time but NAPSA won it on penalty shoot out 4-2.

CHAMPIONS OF CHAMPIONS
This tournament is what makes Power Dynamos better than any club in Zambia. It’s this tournament that opened doors for Power dynamos to go all the way and grab the Cup Winners cup in Africa in 1991. It was usually between 4 teams, that is the trophy winners of previous season and best league finishers for remaining places .
Power Dynamos apeared in the final four times with the ealiest ones being a back to back wins in 1980 and 1981 . in 1980 Power beat Mufulira Wanderers 3-0 and in 1981 they beat Ndola United 4-2.
They also won it in 1984 and the passage to CAF cup winners cup in 1990.

COCA COLA CUP
The shortest cup game in the history of Zambia is the Coca cola up which only had seven titles to its name.
Power Dynamos got one out of the seven in 2003 when they played RED ARROWS in the final. Actually Red Arrows holds the highest number of appearances in the finals without getting the title.

CHARITY SHIELD
Charity Shield now attributed to Samuel Zoom Njovu is another of such titles that Power Dynamos have in their cabinet and won it for the first time in 1998 but the rest of the times they played in the final are laid down below:

2001 Zanaco 1-0 Power Dynamos
2004 Power Dynamos 2-1 Zanaco
2009 Power Dynamos 2-0 Zesco United
2012 Power Dynamos 3-1 Nchanga Rangers
2013 Power Dynamos 2-1 Zanaco
That means Power Dynamos have won the Charity Shield five times with Nkana leading the pack with 15 titles, Kabwe Warriors with 7 while Green Buffaloes and Power Dynamos share the 5 titles each.

UNSUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENTS

INTERNATIONAL BREAK THROUGH
If you are a follower of Power Dynamos FC you will have to keep going back to 1982 when the team was in the world of their own. They had just defended the Champions of Champions in 1981 which gave them passage to play Africa Cup winners Cup in 1982 and the following were their passage to the ever final of a Zambian club:
Coffee Football Club (Uganda) 0-0 Power Dynamos
Power Dynamos 2- 0 Coffee Football Club
Coffee Football Club would then be eliminated.
Up next
Pan African of Tanzania were booted out after the teams played to a 1-1 draw but Power Dynamos won5-4 on penalty shoot outs.
Up next
Power Dynamos played CAPS United of Zimbabwe beating them 3-0 at home and 2-1 away. That result meant Power Dynamos were through to the semi finals and they would play a Mali side in the name of Djoliba Bamako
Power Dynamos 2-1 Djoliba
Djoliba 0-0 Power Dynamos
Through to the final and Power would then be the first Zambian team to reach the final of the Cup winners Cup and the opponent would be Arab Contractors of Egypt. Power lost both legs of the finals to the Egyptians but credit should be given to the team.
However Power Dynamos superb performance in the 1982 Africa Cup of Cup Winners did not pass unrecognised on the continent. It prompted Rothmans International to invite them to a six nations African Club Champions’ soccer tournament held May 1983 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
AND FINALLY IT ARRIVED
African Cup Winners’ Cup
The year was 1991 and Power Dynamos were living up to its name of POWER 90. Power had assembled I think to date is their strongest team which included the following:
Wisdom Chansa as team captain
Linos Makwaza,
Winter Mumba,
Kenan Simambe,
Martin Mwamba (Goalkeeper),
Dennis Chisebuka (Reserve Goalkeeper), Douglas Mwamba,
Simon Mwansa,
Robert Watiyakeni,
Edwin Katongo,
Richard Siame,
Aggrey Chiyangi,
Webby Chilufya,
Richard Sikanyika,
Charles Kafula and
Dick Amokola
They played the final against BCC Lions of Nigeria and lost 3-2 away in Nigeria.
Second leg at Independence Stadium
BCC Lions scored first already leading 3-2 and that made it 4-2. It was a coming from behind and Power Dynamos beat BCC Lions 3-1. The first ever A ZAMBIAN TEAM HAD MANAGED TO WIN.

MY VERDICT
Power Dynamos have assembled a good team and the teams Zesco, Zanaco and Nkana should look out because this won’t be an easy season. Power Dynamos have a belief and I think their striking force will cause a serious threat to the defenders.

I think they are granted top three.
