PSL Board of Governors resolve to uphold suspension of Absa Premiership amid Coronavirus Pandemic

The Premier Soccer League’s Board of Governors have resolved to uphold the suspension on the Absa Premiership and GladAfrica Championship.

The PSL earlier this week announced the suspension of all professional football in the country amidst the coronavirus pandemic that has been on the rise in recent days.

Following the Board of Governors meeting held in Kempton Park on Thursday, a decision was taken by all clubs that the 2019/20 season would remain frozen indefinitely, until such a time that government gives a directive on the status of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“The BOG, which was led by all teams of the Premier Divsion and GladAfrica Championsip, resoved that NSL values the lives of our stakeholders,” said PSL chairman Irvin Khoza in his address.

“We initially said that we will complete the season by no later than June 30, but we shall remain flexible. We will take all possible measures in line with State President and national government.”

Khoza further added that the initial suspension that saw all games scheduled for this week called off was in line with the directve from President Cyril Ramaphosa, and further steps were taken to gain clarity on the exact restrictions before the new decision was taken.

“Let’s be clear that the league was suspended because of the directive from the President that we must assess the situation. Among those directves was the gathering of less than 100 people,” he added.

“We engaged the various ministries to make sure we understand the gravity of the requirements to comply with the President’s directive.”
