Rayon Sports move to the top of the summit in the Rwanda Premier League

Olivier Sefu Niyonzima scored his fifth goal of the season as Rayon Sports moved to the summit of the Azam Rwanda Premier League with a 1-0 victory against lowly Gicumbi at Stade de Gicumbi on Tuesday.

Rwanda international Niyonzima scored the lone goal with a stunning header – off Eric Rutanga’s cross – in the 27th minute to help the Blues extend their unbeaten run to eight games.

The hosts ended the match with one man down after Boniface Gahamanyi was sent off with a straight red card in the 90th minute. Camarade Banamwana’s struggling side remain in 14th position of the 16-team table – with 16 points.

The midfielder’s previous four goals came against Bugesera, Musanze, Marines and Mukura.

Roberto Oliveira’s team went into the game in second place with 40 points, two behind APR, and the win saw them snatching the top spot for the first time this season.

The champions APR host Marines at Kigali Stadium on Wednesday, starting at 3:30pm, seeking for ‘nothing, but victory’ to reclaim the pole position from their bitter rivals.

In another league match held on Tuesday, Bugesera upset beat Sunrise 1-0 at Nyagatare playground, thanks to the lone goal from Steve Nzigamasabo.
