RS Berkane dismantle Gor Mahia to qualify for CAF CC semi-finals

RS Berkane hammered Gor Mahia 5-1 in the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final second-leg match at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco on Sunday.

The result saw the Moroccan side reach the semi-finals after winning the tie 7-1 on aggregate, while Kenyan champions Gor Mahia are eliminated from the tournament.

The Oranges were targeting another victory over K’Ogalo having defeated their visitors 2-0 in the first-leg clash in Kenya last weekend.

Berkane got off to a bright start and they managed to open the scoring through Kodjo Laba, who made it 1-0 to the hosts in the 21st minute.

However, the visitors responded with a goal three minutes later through Lawrence Juma, who beat Berkane goalkeeper Abdelali M’Hamdi to make it 1-1 for Gor Mahia.

It was quite an enthralling first-half as the Oranges piled pressure on K’Ogalo and they grabbed two quick goals after the half-hour mark.

Mohammed Aziz beat Fredrick Odhiambo in Gor Mahia goal to make it 2-1 to Berkane much to the delight of the home ground in the 32nd minute.

Bakr El Helali then put his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-1 to Berkane heading into the half-time break.

The Oranges continued their dominance after the restart and they deservedly extended their lead through Issoufou Dayo.

The Burkina Faso defender scored with a header from Omar Nemssaoui’s corner-kick to make it 4-1 to Berkane on the night.

Gor Mahia were struggling to create chances with Dayo and Aziz looking solid at the heart of the Berkane defence.

Nevetherless, Berkane sealed their emphatic 5-1 victory over Gor Mahia when second-half substitute Youssef Essaiydy scored with a decent finish in the 86th minute.
