Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse has made it known that they are targeting the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

The Lions of Teranga booked their place in next year’s AFCON finals after defeating Sudan 1-0 away in a Group A clash last month.

“The objective as I said, I want to go and win the 2019 Afcon,” Cissé said on BBC.

“There are a dozen teams that can win this competition. We are aware of our strength, we are respected in Africa, we are respected in the world.

“Today, Senegal are able to beat any team, we are able to compete with any team in and outside the continent.”

Next year’s finals will be hosted by Cameroon, who are also the defending champions.

Cisse, who is a retired defensive midfielder, was part of the Senegal team that lost to Cameroon on penalties in the 2002 AFCON final.

“Since the final in 2002, Senegal have struggled with the Afcon, we ran out of luck to win the cup,” he said.

Cisse was speaking ahead of Senegal’s penultimate Group A match on 17 November.
