Turkish Women’s Cup 2020: Harambee Starlets exploits in Turkey end in defeat, shifts focus to AWCON

By Agnes Amondi,

Kenya women’s national team Harambee Starlets completed their Alanya Hold City Cup campaign with a 3-1 defeat against African rivals Ghana on Tuesday evening at the Gold City Complex.

The Black Queens who were on a revenge mission put up a firm display. They shot to the lead in the first half courtesy of an Elizabeth Addo strike. She went on to double in the second half before Grace Asentawaa rolled in a third.

Starlets left it late but could only score a consolation goal.

Head coach David Ouma rang in several changes. Stella Ahondo received her first cap in goal ahead of Judith Osimbo who was between the sticks for the first two matches.

Lucy Akoth and Lydia Akoth started ahead of Jentrix Shikangwa and Mwanahalima Adam who didn’t feature even in the substitutes bench.

This was Kenya’s second defeat after a 5-0 loss to Chile on Saturday. They launched their campaign brightly last Wednesday with a 2-0 win against Northern Ireland U19.

Kenya dumped Ghana out of the Olympic Qualifying race last October after an aggregate 1-0 win away in Accra.

Focus will now shift to the upcoming Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifiers against Tanzania penciled for April. The aggregate winner will then play either Sao Tome and Principe or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the second and final qualifying round.
