Uganda Cranes fall to Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou

Burkina Faso have moved to the top of Group D in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after claiming a 1-0 win over 10-man Uganda at the Stade du 4 Aout in Ouagadougou on Saturday night.

The Stallions join the Cranes on six points but claim the group leadership thanks to their superior head-to-head record over the East Africans. Comoros and Botswana are in third and fourth respectively, both on three points.

After a goalless first half in which the teams cancelled each other out, the match moved decisively in favour of Burkina Faso a quarter hour into the second stanza.

The Cranes conceded a penalty, with the incident resulting in the dismissal of Khalid Aucho. Jonathan Pitroipa then went on to convert the spot kick to put the hosts 1-0 up.

Uganda, who played the remainder of the game with 10 men, were unable to muster any kind of reply, leaving the Burkinabe to claim all three points and leapfrog their opponents on the log.

The teams will meet for the return clash in Kampala on Tuesday.
