“Primus League” champions Vital’O on Saturday 3 edged Messenger Ngozi 4-3 in post-match penalties to lift the 2016 Burundi Super Cup trophy at Gitega Stadium.

The win was sweet revenge for Coach Michael Weiss who lost to Ngozi in the league cup final last season. The curtain raiser signals the start of the 2016/17 Burundi’s top league also known as “Primus League”.

Both teams missed key players who were away in Niger with the national team for their last AFCON 2017 qualifier which they lost 3-1 to the hosts.

The match was tied 1-1 at full time after goals from Ngozi’s Dany Kagabo and Vital’O’s Bulimwengu Jules and had to be decided via the dreaded spot kicks.

Vital’O keeper Jonathan Nahimana was the toast for his side saving two kicks, setting the stage for the victory.
Vital’O will represent Burundi in the CAF Champions league while Ngozi will trade in the Confederations cup next season.
