Zamalek teach Gor Mahia football lesson in sweet revenge

Gor Mahia’s quarterfinal hopes in the CAF Confederation Cup suffered a major blow when they were thrashed 4-0 in a sweet revenge by Zamalek at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on Sunday night.

The White Knights suffered a shock 4-2 loss in East Africa back in Matchday 1, but can be satisfied with a home victory which has taken them to the top of Group D on eight points.

Mahia are at the bottom of the pool with six points, while Petro Atletico and NA Hussein Dey are level in between on seven points each.

Zamalek dominated from the early stages and claimed the lead as early as the 12th minute, with defender Mahmoud Ibrahim heading home from Abdallah Saleh’s excellent free kick delivery.

On 25 minutes the Egyptian doubled their advantage, with Youssef ‘Obama’ Fayed firing home a volley from close range after Mahia had failed to clear their lines from a free kick.

The Egyptian heavyweights continued to boss the game and create scoring opportunities, but the third goal only arrived in the 84th minute when Ferjani Sassi burst through the defence, rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home.

Omar Elsaid Abdelmonsef added a fourth just a couple of minutes later to complete the scoring and secure an emphatic victory for the White Knights.

The teams will wrap up their group stage campaigns next weekend, with Mahia at home to Petro and Zamalek away to Hussein Dey.
