Zambia Starlets demolish Tanzania to book second round place

The Zambia under-20 women’s national football team booked a place in the second round of the Caf qualifiers of the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Papua New Guinea 2016, after they brushed aside Tanzania 4-0 on aggregate.

Zambia were always favoured to progress having scored all four goals of the tie in the first leg played at Azam Sports Complex a fortnight ago thanks to goals from Memory Phiri, Barbra Banda and Ireen Lungu who scored a brace.

However Mutapa’s women could not reciprocate their feat in the second leg played at Nkoloma Stadium on Saturday, a situation which the coach attributed to pressure that comes with playing at home.

“We played very well but we couldn’t just score. Home pressure contributed but I am still happy with the way my girls played,” Mutapa said.

Tanzania coach Rogasian Kaijage in conceding defeat said his team lacked experience in the first leg but came to Zambia to try and over turn the tables.

“Like I said when we came, anything in football is possible. We lacked experience in the first leg but we meant business in the second leg. Zambia is a good side and very experienced,” Kaijage.

Zambia will host South Africa in the second round first leg during the weekend of September 25-27 with the second leg scheduled for the weekend of October 9 -11.

South Africa defeated Botswana 9 -1 over two legs to progress to the second round.
