Zambia: Zesco United in cloud nine after Lifting FAZ Super League trophy

Zesco United lifted the trophy on Saturday despite losing 4-0 at home to Zanaco, four days after they were confirmed 2015 MTN/Faz Super League champions.

The defeat was only the third suffered by Zesco United, all three of them at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Zanaco were the better side on the day and their dominance paid off on 15 minutes when Aubrey Funga turned in Moses Phiri’s free kick.

Phiri increased the visitors’ lead on 22 minutes and Boyd Musonda put the game beyond the champions when he found the back of the net from a free kick.

Phiri completed his second brace in the 90th minute, effectively cementing Zanaco’s position on the log with 60 points, four adrift of Zesco United and six better than third-placed Power Dynamos who are away at Nchanga Rangers on Sunday.

Although Zanaco were happy to win the match, it was a double celebration for both teams as Zesco United celebrated lifting the league trophy in front of their fans.

Zanaco coach Mumamba Numba said after the match that his side was assured of finishing second and representing Zambia in the Caf Confederation Cup while Zesco United coach George Lwandamina said his players lacked motivation after wrapping the league championship on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, relegation threatened Nakambala Leopards defeated Red Arrows 3-1 thanks to a goal and a brace from Judge Mkandawire and Venecious Mapande respectively. Lubinda Mundia scored for Red Arrows.

The victory pushed Nakambala from 15th into 13th.

At Imboela Stadium, 2015 Barclays Cup finalists Nkwazi and Green Buffaloes rehearsed for the cup final by playing out a 2-2 draw. Christopher Katongo scored a double for the visitors while Lottie Nyimbili and Steward Chikandiwa scored a goal apiece for Nkwazi.

At Woodlands Stadium, another Lusaka derby ended in a stalemate as already relegated National Assembly and Lusaka Dynamos played to a 1-1 draw.

Webster Mutapa gave an early lead to the visitors when he found the back of the net on six minutes but his goal was cancelled out when Stanley Banda equalised in the 75th minute for the two bottom sides to share the spoils.

There were 14 goals scored across four matches played on Saturday with three accounting for 12 goals.

Four more matches will be played on Sunday.
