ABSA Premiership: Nurkovic inspires Amakhosi to victory over Polokwane City

League leaders Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to beat Polokwane 2-3 in an enthralling encounter at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday thanks to another magnificent performance from Samir Nurkovic.

Chiefs were looking to consolidate their lead at the top of the table with Sundowns faltering against Highlands Park on Friday. Polokwane on the other hand in the bottom scrap wanted three points to see them move out of that drop.

It was the home side who started on the front foot and their efforts paid dividends in the 15th minute with Lesiba William Nku lobbing Daniel Akpeyi in the Chiefs goal.

Zambian midfielder Salulani Phiri nearly made it 2-0 but he skewed his effort with only the the goal keeper to beat.

City came strong after the break and doubled their lead in the 60th minute with a deflected effort from a Jabulani Maluleke freekick.

Kaizer Chiefs showed traits of champions when they came back just when the game looked out of reach with three goals in 8 minutes. First Willard rose high to head in a Samir Nurkovic flick from on a corner with 20 minutes to goal.

Then 5 minutes later it was Kenyan Anthony Akumu who poked in another Nurkovic flick from yet another corner kick.

Nurkovic then took matters into his own hands a minute later after receiving a pass from Daniel Cardoso near the area to pick out the bottom corner from range.

Kambole should’ve made it four from a gaping goal in the remaining minutes, but was met with a goal-line clearance by Edgar Manaka.

Chiefs missed another chance to put the result to bed in added time as Cardoso found the underside of the crossbar from the spot, but the Amakhosi still picked up the win to move six points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns.
