Kenya went down 3-1 to Ghana in 2016 AWCON match laced with controversial refereeing in Limbe.

The ref awarded a penalty from what was clearly a ball handled outside the box, with skipper Elizabeth Addo converting in the 71st minute for Ghana’s second goal.

She would follow it up with another penalty award four minutes later this time to Kenya after striker Esse Akida was brought down tumbling in the box only to rescind the decision.

Earlier, the “Harambee Starlets” of Kenya who were making maiden appearance at the continental showpiece gave a good a count themselves, and took a deserved lead in the 24th minute through Spedag FC’s Akida, who volleyed in from close range.

The “Black Queens” of Ghana should have responded through Addo whose free-kick in the 28th minute went inches wide.

Kenya took the slim lead into the breather. Ghana came back more determined and went on level terms in the 50th minute through Samire Suleman’s header from a free-kick.

Portia Boakye easily beat Kenya’s keeper Samantha Akinyi for the third in the 90th minute with a well taken free-kick to seal the game for Ghana.

Ghana are now joint top of group “B” with Nigeria who walloped Mali 6-0 in the opening group match.
