Newly appointed Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has vowed to to bring back the glory days to the name of South African Football.

He said this at a Press Conference on Wednesday afternoon where he again reiterated his lofty ambitions to take South Africa back to the top of Africa and the world.

In an hour-long interaction, Broos spelt out his vision but pleaded with football fans to be patient with what he wants to do and achieve with the Senior Men’s National team.

“I know I will succeed. I think everyone can agree. We have good players. And again it is the way you treat the players. Coming to the national team is not holiday. You have to perform. You have the responsibility towards the supporters,” he stated.

Coach Broos shocked the football world when he led an Indomitable Lions (Cameroon) side to a gold medal in Gabon in 2017 and has vowed to do his best to return South Africa to the top.
He however asked the public not to expect instant results but to exercise patience.

He said qualification for Qatar 2022 should not be the main priority but the emphasis should be on 2023 AFCON going forward.

He added though that he would give it his best shot to still qualify for Qatar.

“It’s been more than 10 years since South Africa qualified for the World Cup. That shows how difficult to qualify for the World Cup in Africa. And it will be tough for South Africa. But don’t be angry about that,” Broos said.

“I’ll first be preparing a team for our World Cup qualifiers in September. So I will be meeting first with my SA assistant as he knows local football better.

“We will make some necessary decisions then and this is very, very important to do. Then we will be looking to see some local games as soon as possible before watching the over 60 SA players who play abroad. It will be important to profile those overseas based players and see how regularly they are playing and at which level.”

Bafana Bafana are in Group G, together with Ghana, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.
