Malawi overcame Mauritius 1-0 in the 2016 COSAFA Castle Cup Group B game played at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Wednesday evening.

The Flames of Malawi stay on position two on Group B standings with six points, while Mauritius also remain at the bottom of the table.

The Dodos of Mauritius began the match brightly – applying some pressure on Malawi’s Flames defence in search of an early goal.

However, the Malawi’s Flames took control of the game as the match progressed in the 32nd minute Frank Mhango’s effort was blocked in the Dodos box.

Mauritius goalkeeper Kevin Jean-Louis went down injured a few minutes before half-time and play was stopped, and ultimately, the first-half ended goalless.

The Flames forced a corner-kick immediately after the restart and Miracle Gabeya fired Malawi into the lead from the set-piece in the 47th minute.

The goal gave Malawi a boost as they applied some pressure on the Dodos defence in search of more goals as the hour-mark approached.

In the 69th minute, Colin Bell tried to play a long ball for his Mauritius teammate, but the ball went out for a throw in as the Dodos searched for an equalizer.

It should have been 2-0 to Malawi in the 87th minute, but Dodos shot-stopper Jean-Louis pushed away Phiri Jr’s attempt from a well-taken corner-kick.

In the end, Malawi managed to hold onto their slender lead in the remaining minutes and they walked away 1-0 winners.
