COVID-19: Ghana Govt lifts ban on contact sports

Following stakeholders consultation, Government has decided to lift the ban on football and other contact sports suspended six months ago.

Sporting Activities were halted in March, 2020 following the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), subsequently, cancelled the remainder of the 2019/2020 football season.

However, the President lifted the ban on non-contact sports such as Tennis, Golf, Badminton, Dart, Cricket, Swimming etc.

The Ghanaian first man, in his 16th address to the nation gave a special dispensation to the U17 and U20 Female National football teams as well as the U17 Male Nation football team to prepare for upcoming international engagements.

President Nana Addo in his 17th address on Sept 20, noted that, the Ghana Premier League and the Division One League will resume on October 30. Additionally, he said, 25% of spectators will be allowed in our various stadia with wearing of facemask mandatory.

“With respect to football, after due consultations with the Ghana Football Association, it has been decided that the Ghana Premier League and the Division One Football League will restart on Friday, 30th October, with a full regime of testing of the players, technical and management staff.”

Medeama SC were top of the pile with 30 points when the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League, two points clear of second-placed Aduana Stars.
