Gor Mahia Finally Heads to South Nyanza to Face Sony

By Bonface Osano,

The trip to Awendo was uncertain because of standoff between the playing unit and Gor’s management due to the nagging issue of unpaid salaries and allowances, a breakthrough was however reached after club chairman Ambrose Rachier met the players today afternoon and part of their salaries was paid with a promise to clear the rest later.

Sony’s recent poor record of 4 losses and 2 draws against Gor Mahia coupled by last Friday’s 5-1 heavy loss in the hands of AFC Leopards spells doom for the Awendo side ahead of highly anticipated Wednesday 6th tie against the Champions.

Sony Sugar FC hails from Awendo in the larger South Nyanza region which is also the spiritual home of K’Ogalo; the mysterious medicine man Gor the son of Ogada in whose honor the team was named hailed from Kanyamwa village in Ndhiwa Homabay county and hence this encounter has always served as a welcome ceremony for a lost son, though matters inside the field has never been the same.

Sony smarting from the Labour Day thrashing by Ingwe in what head Coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno termed the worst loss of his career as a coach must move with speed to fix a shambolic defense that let in goals carelessly before they face the on form team of the season so far, they must quickly come up with a formula to contain Gor’s scoring machine consisting of Michael Olunga, Meddie Kagere and Ali Abondo.

Coach Frank Nuttal will have to focus his charges away from the financial woes if they have to push their winning streak to 8; Gor overcame what was billed as their biggest test of the season beating physical Uinzi Stars by two goals to nothing to strengthen their title credentials. The deadly trio of Olunga, Kagere and Abondo who have scored a total of 17 goals will once again be called upon to deliver goals; a win will cement Gor’s top position with 26 points from 10 matches.
