Joel Matip considers return to Cameroon National team

Liverpool defender Joel Matip is reportedly ‘considering’ a return to international football with Cameroon after Samuel Eto’o was elected president of the country’s FA.

Matip hasn’t played for Cameron since 2015 but there are reports that he could make his return to the international stage at the age of 30.

African Insider state: “Liverpool defender Joel Matip is “considering” a return to the Cameroon National Team.

“Samuel Eto’o’s election as FECAFOOT President was unexpected, and has turned the heads of many players-in-exile. This could well see a return in interest for many dual-nationals.”

Former Barcelona and Everton striker Eto’o will hold the role as president of the Cameroon FA for the next four years and it will see him act as a figurehead for January’s Africa Cup of Nations – which takes place in Cameroon.

Amongst Eto’o’s key policies are the attempts to raise funding within the sport and also to retain the services of dual-nationals and retired stars, such as Matip.

It is unclear whether the Liverpool centre-back will declare himself available for selection for Cameroon in the upcoming AFCON.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will already see Mohamed Salah (Egypt), Sadio Mane (Senegal) and Naby Keita (Guinea) leave for the tournament, which takes place from January 9 to February 6, 2022

Matip has been in fantastic form this season and his partnership with Virgil van Dijk is one of the reasons why the Reds are just one point off the summit of the Premier League and into the round of 16 in the Champions League.
