Kenyan Premier League title sponsors SportPesa were on Thursday night honored in the Discovery Sports Industry awards held at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The regional most followed online betting company beat off competition for other sponsorship companies to clinch the Best African Sponsorship award for their partnership with the KPL.
SportPesa marketing manager Kester Muhanji received the award on behalf of the company, and termed it a big win for Kenyan football.
“We are delighted to have won this award ahead of global brands and campaigns that are strong and present on several mediums around the world. What excites us more is that our investment in the SportPesa Premier League is buoyed by a need to showcase Kenya club football as an engaging, exciting and a competitive league. This is therefore a win for local football in general and we are truly honoured,” he said.
Muhanji added: “In a bid to revolutionize the face of football in Kenya we took up sponsorship of the Kenyan Premier League effective on August 1, 2015. Our aspiration is to have the Kenyan national soccer team Harambee Stars compete in the 2022 World cup.”
Other African brands nominated in that category were AfrAsia Bank for sponsoring the Mauritius Open, DHL (African as One), Castle Lager and FC Barcelona (Enjoy the best of Both Worlds), Gem Diamonds (Kalahari Challenge 2015) and Safaricom (Athletics Kenya Series)
