Kothbiro Tournament 2014

Kothbiro Tournament 2014

By Administrator,

Following the conclusion of all league and cup matches countrywide, football fans in Nairobi will be treated to exhilarating piece of action as the 36th edition of the annual Kothbiro tournament rolls out. Will it unveil another Bobby Ogolla, David ‘Kamoga’ Ochieng’, Macdonald Mariga or Victor Wanyama?

The title name ‘Kothbiro’ which is a Dholuo word meaning ‘the rain is coming’ was coined since one player used to complain that the meetings after training should be brief since the rain was about to fall. This explains why the tournament is held at this rainy season.

The tourney which gives upcoming players an opportunity to play alongside Kenya premier league stars and foreign based players has a rich history behind it stemming back from the inaugural edition back in 1976. Jamal Mohammed, Humphrey Mieno, Peter Wainaina and Carlson Mweresa are some of the products of this competition.

Speaking to Soka25east, organizer Charles Handas confirmed that preparations have hit top gear. ”We are expecting a total of 32 teams and the registration fee per team is Ksh 5,000. Negotiations with potential sponsors are also ongoing and I would like to challenge the governor for Nairobi county Honorable Evans Kidero to chip in and support this tournament.”

2013 champions Makongeni will aim to defend their title but will face stiff opposition from Bravo 67, Opitos, Nyoi, Pelico, A 1000, Kibera Black Stars and Pumwani.

“Registration will be closed on Wednesday 19th November and representatives of the registered teams are invited for the seeding and draws that will be conducted at Umeme Sports Ground on Thursday 20th November. For more details, interested parties can reach me through 0722172389.” Concluded Handas.
