KPL Weekend Preview: Ingwe Back on a Hunting Mission as in-laws Gor Face Rejuvenated Sofapaka

By Bonface Osano,

AFC Leopards Vs Ushuru FC

Animated Leopards will be back on a hunting mission after clawing hapless KCB 3-0 in a midweek fixture that was staged at Nyayo on Wednesday, Ingwe will back on the same territory this Saturday April 18, 2015 when they face a stubborn Ushuru FC who also taxed their midweek opponent Mathare United 2-1.

Red hot Jacob Keli will be a key player in this encounter, his second season at the den seems to have commenced well and he has been scoring decisive goals, he delivered a consolation goal against arch rivals Gor over the weekend before grabbing a brace against KCB on Wednesday, an impressive run by all standards. His partner Emmanuel Ngama has been showing flashes of brilliance and it’s just a matter of time before he starts banging in goals, he missed a penalty on Wednesday.

Leopards will be missing the services of defender Edwin Wafula who was sent off after picking second yellow for dangerous tackle inside the box against Ushuru, coach Logarusic will be digging deep into his squad to find a suitable replacement. A win for Ingwe will push them to top three in the KPL log with 15 points.

Coach Ken Kenyatta on the other hand will be buoyed by the 2-1 win over tactical and rejuvenated Mathare on Wednesday coming into this fixture; the win was their second this season after the first win against inconsistent Tusker FC. The battle against Ingwe will be a tough one for the taxmen who are known to concede at least a goal in every game, they have let in 6 in 7 matches and are currently placed 11th with 9 points. The match kicks off at 430PM.

KCB Vs City Stars

In an early kick off at the Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, the bottom of the table battle will see KCB try to get their bearing in the 2015 season, their performance has been dismal, dishing out points at will, the latest recipient being AFC Leopards on Wednesday. The same can be said about City Stars who are yet to record a win this season losing all their matches except for one draw.

A win for the Bankers will see them switch positions with Muhoroni to number 13 in the KPL log while a win for City will have zero effect on their position in the table.

Gor Mahia Vs Sofapaka

This will be the highlight of the KPL weekend action, each time the two lock horns, top quality football is on display and the encounter has gradually developed into a fierce rivalry over the years. This weekend will be no different when K’Ogalo host Batoto ba Mungu on Sunday April 19, 2015 at the spiritual City Stadium also called ‘Tok K’Omwanda’ by Gor fans, fireworks, pure football heaven will be expected.

Gor is coming into this game riding high after midweek demolishing of the weeping boys City Stars 3-0; returnee Abondo who is enjoying a form of his life struck once pushing his tally to six goals in KPL before sensational Michael ‘Midusa’ Olunga and exciting winger Innocent Wafula added second and third goals respectively. The trio plus experienced Meddie Kagere will be pivotal for Gor against Sofapaka as they will be relied upon for goals.

Coach Frank Nuttal rested a number of his key players in Khalid Aucho and Godfrey Walusimba perhaps in anticipation of the huge task ahead this weekend; the return of defender Dikir Glay who had issues with his work papers seemed to have solidified Gor’s defense and for the first time they registered a clean sheet, his partnership with the infield skipper Musa Mohammed is expected to continue this weekend. A win for Gor will push their tally to 19 points and cement the top spot position.

Resurgent Sofapaka on the other hand will be seeking to build on their back to back wins against Nakuru All Stars and Chemelil FC to get their title ambitions firmly back on track, the Sam Timbe side has had a slow start to the season losing points to teams they previously beat without breaking a sweat. The last league encounter between Sofapaka and Gor saw the 2009 champions beat K’Ogalo 3-1 with Fiston scoring a brace and this could just be a revenge match.

Set piece specialist Collins Shivachi, ageless John Baraza and danger man Fiston Abdul will lead the goal hunt against the champions. Match will kick off at 3PM.

Western Stima Vs Tusker

This will be a cracker, Stima has been the surprise team in this season and they are currently placed 2nd in KPL log with 12 points from 7 matches, who expected that anyway? The Henry Omino men have been resolute, picking maxing points against top sides like Sofapaka, and Tusker could just be the next on the queue. Their midweek adventure against Sony away in Awendo saw them emerge tops beating the host by a goal to nothing, most coaches will agree that coming out unscathed in Awendo is never an easy task and Omino’s conquest was no fluke.

Tusker lost to Bandari on Wednesday going down 1-0 to the visiting Dockers, the result just added to the Brewers’s poor run in the season that has seen them register a paltry two wins in 7 fixtures; Coach Kimanzi is a marked man and his job hangs in the balance if the word that he was given 5 matches to prove his worth to his employers is anything to go by. Tusker is 10th in the KPL table with 9 points; the match kicks off at 3PM at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday.

Nakuru All Stars Vs Ulinzi Stars

The Nakuru derby kicks off at 3PM at the Afraha Stadium on Sunday, the soldiers are on a roll and this is expected to be an easy fixture for them. James Makwata has been sensational for the Ulinzi side and has so far netted 5 times latest being the midweek brace against Muhuroni Youth. A win for Ulinzi will cement their top three spot with 16 points.

The Peter Okidi side is still languishing in the danger zone and this will be another chance for them to improve their standings.

Chemelil Sugar FC Vs Thika United

Chemelil will be hosting their second home match away from home when they take on the Milk men on Sunday at Muhoroni stadium in Awasi, the Chemelil stadium is in bad shape and the surface is dangerous for playing the beautiful game.

Coach Mike Muiruri will be up against an exciting Thika side that boasts of back to back wins against Stima and All Stars respectively and they will have to be at their best to claim a win; Chemelil lost midweek fixture 1-0 to Sofapaka in Machakos.

Thika Coach Tim Breytt is building a young side that is exciting to watch and can also score goals; it will remain to be seen if his philosophy will continue to flourish when they face Chemelil. Match kicks off at 12PM.

Mathare United Vs Sony Sugar FC

The slum boys will be looking to impress their new sponsor Britam Insurance when they host the millers at Nyayo stadium on Sunday at 3PM. Both Mathare and Sony lost midweek fixtures in the hands of Ushuru FC and Western Stima respectively and this clash will present an opportunity for redemption for both.

A win for Sony will push them back to top five with 13 points while a win for Mathare will cement their top 10 position with improved point’s tally of 11.
