Mohamed Salah raises the bar in the Premier League

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah has been in good form recently with top notch performances in recent games against Manchester City and Watford.

With the goal at Watford Salah equalled Ivorian Star Didier Drogba’s Premier League goalscoring record of 104 goals in his 166 appearances.

It’s an incredible feat from Salah given that the Ivorian achieved that feat in 254 games. The Egyptian can go to become the all-time African Top scorer with his career still ahead of him.

He has also made 48 assists in that period. His performances have led many soccer enthusiasts to believe that Salah could be the best player in the world at the moment.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp weighed in on the debate ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

“Yes, I have no idea how you win the Ballon d’Or, to be honest. If it’s about being in the Champions League final, scoring the most goals, stuff like this, then it could be slightly difficult maybe,” Said Klopp

“But if it’s about performances over the last two years, then he has a chance from my point of view. But I’m not too much in the competition, so [I don’t] understand exactly how it works. Does he get now the recognition finally? Look, internally he’s always got it. Externally, I don’t know. You can answer that much better than I can. But that after the two goals he scored, now people think all of a sudden that he could be the best player in the world is a bit strange.

“He’s scored goals like this before and he’s performed for years on an incredibly high level. My concern is, first and foremost, that he will do it again and again and again and again – what he did so far. But whatever you want to write positively about it, do it, he deserves it. But now let’s prepare Atletico.”

Dubbed the ‘Egyptian King’ by Liverpool fans, Salah netted 19 goals as the Reds ended their 30-year wait for a domestic top-flight title last year.

The 29-year-old, a two-time BBC and Caf African footballer of the year, also opened the scoring as the Anfield side beat Spurs to win the Champions League in 2018-19.

In his four full seasons on Merseyside, Salah has not dipped below 15 league goals, a level of consistency which has swiftly lifted him up the African Premier League scoring chart.

He initially moved to England in January 2014, joining Chelsea from Basel, but only scored twice in 13 league outings for the Blues before two loan spells in Italy.
