Overused City Stadium deemed ‘unfit’ to stage league matches as ThikaStadium and Ruaraka to host medium and low risk matches

Nairobi’s City Stadium will  not host any league match until it meets the
required minimum standards. This is according to
the Kenyan Premier League Stadia Safety and Security Committee
following an inspection done on the stadium last weekend

The committee  chaired by Laban Jobita gave their verdict   “the committee noted
that City Stadium’s artificial playing turf was badly damaged and
there were clear signs of overuse and poor maintenance”” the sitting terraces were full of dust and very dirty with  no
safety officer within the facility,  no running water
within the facility the stadium lacked the necessary health and
safety certification and plans, among other shortcomings he added

The stadium  is home of the Current league champion Gor Mahia  while
other Nairobi-based clubs like  Ushuru FC, KCB FC and AFC Leopards
have  sometimes use the venue as an alternative pitch to host their
matches.

The league’s Governing Council, meeting on Friday, will look at the
recommendations made by the committee.

Thika County Stadium and Ruaraka were given thumbs up to host medium and low
risk matches while Nyayo Stadium was passed fit to host high risk
matches. Moi Stadium, Kisumu, Kasarani Stadium and Kenyatta Stadium,
Machakos, made the cut but the safety committee recommended necessary
improvements at the facilities to meet the internationally acceptable
standards.
