Sundowns beat TP Mazembe to qualify for knock out stage

Mamelodi Sundowns have done the double over TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League as they won 1-0 courtesy of a Lebohang Maboe goal on Tuesday.

Masandawana have won all four of their games in Group B and that means they are the first side to have qualified for the knockout phase.

The game began with a frantic pace, with the front three pressing high from the word go. The high intensity almost paid off immediately as Themba Zwane had a chance to play Peter Shalulile through but the pass was too heavy for the striker to latch onto it.

Shalulile was back in the thick of things in the sixth minute but the visitor’s defence was alert to pounce on the striker and cut out the danger. The Ravens had their first attempt as Kinzumbi found space and had a go but his shot went straight into the safe hands of Denis Onyango.

It took twenty-eight minutes for Masandawana to break the deadlock as Lebo Maboe slotted the ball after some great interplay in the box and a fine pass from “Mshishi”. This is the second goal that he has scored in the CAF Champions League this season and his fourth in all competitions. Tresor Mputu who scored in Lubumbashi tried his luck but Onyango was on par to make a strong save. The first half ended with the score at 1-0.

TP Mazembe showed that they did not want to walk away empty-handed as they started the second half at a high tempo, Baleke had a chance to pull one back but his effort was saved by Onyango. A few minutes later Lyle Lakay was on course to block a shot by Sudi. Gaston Sirino saw his thunderous shot sail across the face of the visiting keeper’s goal. The battle between Baleke and Onyango in the second half kept going but the Ugandan international was the one who came out on top as he saved a close-range shot from the attacker.

With the clock winding down, Shalulile had two glorious attempts to stretch the lead but the Namibian’s efforts could only sail over the crossbar. A solitary goal from Maboe ensures Masandawana maintains their winning streak in all competitions.

Elsewhere in Group B Al Hilal & CR Belouizdad played a goalless draw earlier in the afternoon.
