Sundowns March on to Nedbank Quarters

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the last eight of the Nedbank Cup after they beat Polokwane City by four goals to none at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The technical team rang the changes ahead of the game with the likes of Ricardo Goss, Rushine De Reuck, Haashim Domingo, Lesedi Kapinga, Andile Jali and Kermit Erasmus entering the starting eleven.

The game started with Masandawana dominating possession and putting the GladAfrica Championship side on the back foot. It took the Brazilians ten minutes to find the opener as Peter Shalulile capitalized on rebound from a Domingo shot which was saved by Phoku in goals. A few minutes later Lebo Maboe found the second of the day after being played in unselfishly by Kermit Erasmus. Kapinga who was one of the changes to the XI scored his first goal in the colours of The Brazilians to make the score three- zero soon after the second goal. Jali also got himself on the score sheet as he calmly slotted in a penalty after Kapinga was fouled from behind in the box.

In the second half, changes were made at the beginning of the half as Aubrey Modiba, Keletso Makgalwa and Promise Mkhuma made their way to the field. The visiting side turned up their intensity in the second stanza after they too made half-time changes and managed to keep the score at a minimum. De Reuck who was making his first start for Bafana Bastyle had a chance to score after a cross from Modiba but the defender could not find the proper connection.

Polokwane City continued to try to trouble Masandawana but the resilient defence was on par to match them and saw Goss remaining largely untested throughout the tie, resulting in the keeper claiming his first clean sheet for the club.

Mamelodi Sundowns march on to the last eight to face Orlando Pirates.
